Anti-abortion activists are pledging to turn the Senate red with help from a federal investigation finding that ObamaCare subsidies could be paying for abortions.
With Congress close to recess, seven anti-abortion groups held a press conference to warn vulnerable Democrats to prepare for a fight on the campaign trail as they leave Washington.
{mosads}”For every senator who voted for taxpayer funding for abortion, we will be proclaiming that,” said Susan B. Anthony (SBA) List President Marjorie Dannenfelser.
“We will be doing that in the middle of these Senate races.”
Groups such as the SBA List are using new evidence that insurers are ignoring rules to segregate funds for abortion from ObamaCare subsidies to sharpen their attacks against incumbent Democrats.
The finding on insurers was reported Tuesday by the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office and generated a significant response from the right this week.
Activists called on Senate Democrats to hold votes this week on two bills to address the problem by codifying a long-standing ban on taxpayer funding for abortion and requiring new disclosure about abortion coverage in exchange plans.
Acknowledging that votes are highly unlikely, Dannenfelser said the bills are likely to be on the top of the agenda if Republicans take control of the upper chamber next year, along with a measure to restrict abortion to within 20 weeks of a woman’s pregnancy.
“Using these attacks in our Senate races helps to create a mandate,” Dannenfelser said.
“Those would be the top issues in the Senate, and if we had a majority leader to bring them up, the votes would be there without question [to pass the bills].”
