Actress Elizabeth Banks touts Planned Parenthood in Web ad for Obama
{mosads}Banks says in the video that Obama “has not compromised on women’s health” and deserves to be reelected.
Obama’s aggressive push for female voters reached a new level earlier this year amid the debate over his administration’s contraception mandate.
Obama is campaigning in Colorado with Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown University law student who was thrust into the center of the contraception debate after Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) blocked her from testifying at a hearing about the policy.
The mandate requires most employers to cover birth control in their employees’ health plans, with exceptions for religious institutions. Republicans say those exceptions should be broader. They want any business owner to be able to opt out of the mandate based on his or her religious beliefs, even if the business isn’t affiliated with a religion.
Banks makes an implicit reference to that debate in the campaign’s Web video while saying she relied on Planned Parenthood when she was uninsured.
“Yes, I got birth control, but it was for my massive migraine headaches and my heavy flow. Yeah, I’m on record saying I had a heavy flow,” the actress says. “And unfortunately, these are the types of things that I don’t want to discuss with employers. I don’t want to talk about that with my employer. That’s between me and my doctor, and at the time my doctor happened to be at Planned Parenthood.”
