Koch-backed group’s ad targets ObamaCare co-ops

Americans for Prosperity is taking aim at a vulnerable Democratic senator for his role in an ObamaCare insurance program that has collapsed in Colorado and about a dozen other states.

Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Col.), who is among the most vulnerable Democrats in next year’s election cycle, has been repeatedly hit for his support of ObamaCare.

The new ad from the Charles and David Koch-backed group specifically targets a startup insurance program, known as co-ops, which have received billions of federal dollars to increase competition among healthcare plans.

But in the last two years, more than half of co-op programs have faltered financially. Just 15 of the original 23 co-ops remain in operation, and the administration acknowledges that more of them could fail, potentially leaving a strike against President Obama’s signature law.

About half of those closures were announced in the last several weeks, ahead of the open enrollment season that began Nov. 1.

Americans for Prosperity has spent hundreds of millions of dollars attacking ObamaCare — an issue that has faded since the 2012 election but remains a political sticking point for Democrats.

“Senator Bennet said one thing and did another,” AFP Colorado State Director Michael Fields said in a statement. “When he voted for Obamacare he promised we’d be able to keep our doctors and health insurance, but with the Colorado HealthOp going bust, Coloradans are finding out that it just wasn’t true.”
