Poll: Majority of voters oppose state abortion restrictions like those in Georgia, Alabama

A majority of voters in a new poll released Wednesday oppose strict restrictions on abortion like those passed recently in Alabama and Georgia. 

Fifty-six percent of voters said they strongly or somewhat oppose other states passing similar bans, according to the Morning Consult + Politico poll.

{mosads}Thirty-three percent of those surveyed said they strongly or somewhat support other states passing similar laws.

The Alabama ban, signed into law last week by Republican Gov. Kay Ivey, would ban all abortions except when a mother’s health is at risk. 

Georgia’s law would ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, typically around six weeks into a pregnancy. 

Both laws are likely to face legal challenges. 

A majority of voters also said they oppose overturning Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that established a woman’s right to have an abortion. 

Of those surveyed, 52 percent said they strongly oppose or somewhat oppose the Supreme Court overturning that decision, while 27 percent said they strongly or somewhat support that happening.

Twenty-one percent said didn’t they didn’t know or had no opinion. 

The poll of 1,995 registered voters was conducted between May 17-19 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
