Global coronavirus death toll passes 100,000

The confirmed global death toll from COVID-19 has surpassed 100,000 people, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

The actual toll, however, could be much higher because of a lack of transparency about the data from China and other countries.

In the U.S. alone, more than 475,000 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Nearly 18,000 people in America have died, but the actual death toll may be significantly higher due to testing shortages and the difficulty in confirming cause of death outside of hospitals.
