Majority of Americans still wear masks at all times despite loosened restrictions in states: poll

A majority of Americans say they are still wearing their masks at all times despite loosened coronavirus restrictions in some states, such as mask mandates being abolished.

The Ipsos poll found that 57 percent of Americans are still wearing their masks at all times when they leave the house.

Around 50 percent of people said that they always remain six feet from others.

Some states have loosened their coronavirus restrictions by getting rid of capacity limits in certain venues or completely abolishing a mask mandate.

Despite the loosened restrictions, only 8 percent say they never wear a mask outside their home and four percent say they never social distance.

The poll comes after the Center for Disease Prevention and Control updated its guidelines to say vaccinated people no longer needed to wear masks outside when they are not in a crowded area.

The poll found 43 percent of Americans agree with the CDC’s updated recommendations, with baby boomers and Gen Xers being more supportive of the move than millennials and Gen Z.

Under CDC guidance, most Americans are still required to wear their masks at all times outside the home since most Americans are still not fully vaccinated, although half of Americans have had their first COVID-19 vaccine shot.

Mask wearing has gone down since April, mostly among those who are vaccinated. The number of vaccinated people wearing masks was at 74 percent in April and is now at 63 percent.

Unvaccinated mask wearing has stayed stable at 49 percent in April and 47 percent in May.

The poll was conducted from April 30 to May 3 and surveyed 1,022 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
