Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka is on his last day of isolation after testing positive for a breakthrough COVID-19 case, ESPN reported.
Celtics spokesperson Christian Megliola said Monday that Udoka, who is asymptomatic, is expected to participate in person when the Celtics start their training camp on Tuesday. Monday was the coach’s last day of a 10-day quarantine prompted by his breakthrough case.
Multiple Celtics players have not received the COVID-19 vaccine, according to a Boston.com article published Sunday.
The NBA’s players union, the NBPA, has pushed back against the league setting any rules mandating that all players get vaccinated.
League rules stipulate that unvaccinated players will be allowed to play in NBA games but will have to submit to daily COVID-19 testing.
Rolling Stone reported Saturday that players such as Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving and Orlando Magic forward Jonathan Isaac have not been vaccinated.
The league recently denied Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins’s request for a religious exemption on getting the COVID-19 vaccine.
Celtics center Enes Kanter told Rolling Stone about his frustration over players seeking religious exemptions to the coronavirus vaccine.
“If a guy’s not getting vaccinated because of his religion, I feel like we are in a time where the religion and science has to go to together,” Kanter said. “I’ve talked to a lot of religious guys — I’m like: ‘It saves people’s lives, so what is more important than that?’”
