Warriors coach says NBA star Andrew Wiggins is now vaccinated, cleared for games

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said that star forward Andrew Wiggins has received his COVID-19 vaccination, making him eligible to participate in all of his team’s games this season. 

“Andrew got vaccinated,” Kerr told reporters after Sunday’s practice. “He just told me today that he was fine with us acknowledging it and that will be the end of it. I’m not going to answer any questions beyond that.”

If he had not been vaccinated, Wiggins would’ve been barred from playing home games for the Warriors this season due to city regulations. 

San Francisco’s government last month mandated that citizens have to show proof of vaccination to attend large indoor events, prohibiting citizens from showing negative COVID-19 tests to gain access. 

Kerr also said that the Warriors are now 100 percent fully vaccinated, stating he now wants to focus on his team’s upcoming regular season slate, according to ESPN.

“I’m not answering any of those questions,” Kerr said. “We’re done. It’s happened. That’s all anybody needs to know. We can talk about practice or games.”

Wiggins, the first overall selection in the 2014 NBA draft, made headlines last week along with fellow star players Kyrie Irving, Bradley Beal and Jonathan Isaac over their hesitancy on getting vaccinated. 

The league also unveiled its COVID-19 safety protocol, requiring unvaccinated players to follow strict mandates throughout the upcoming season. 

NBA spokesperson Mike Bass said last week the league will withhold pay for unvaccinated players who miss games this season. 

The NBA, which now has 95 percent of its players vaccinated, recently declined Wiggins’s request to be religiously exempt from getting vaccinated, ESPN noted.
