Lawmakers demand ‘immediate dismissal’ of charges against NGO workers

A number of lawmakers, including Wolf and Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.), have threatened to cut off the $1.5 billion in annual U.S. aid to Egypt if it’s not overturned. 

In a “Dear Colleague” message urging lawmakers to sign on to the letter, Connolly and Wolf raise particular concern with the sentencing of the son of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, a former member of Congress. Sam LaHood and 14 other Americans were sentenced in absentia after leaving the country shortly after the charges were first brought.

“Many of you have likely benefited from the knowledge and expertise of these organizations in your own work as they frequently provide testimony, briefings and analysis to congressional staff and Members,” they wrote. “Please join us in sending the letter below to Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi pressing for true justice to be served and a swift resolution of this unacceptable situation for all 43 NGO workers.”
