Document: Joint Statement by the Leaders of Japan and the United States on Contributions to Global Minimization of Nuclear Material

Japan will turn over more than 700 pounds of weapons-grade plutonium and highly-enriched uranium to the United States, the two nations announced on the eve of an international security summit Monday in The Hague.

The stockpile, maintained by Japan for research purposes, will be securely transported to the U.S., where it will be converted into “less sensitive forms,” according to a joint statement from both countries.
