Jordanian official warns US of ‘dangerous consequences’ if Jerusalem recognized as Israel’s capital

The foreign minister of Jordan on Sunday evening said he spoke with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson about “dangerous consequences” if the U.S. decides to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“Spoke with #US Secretary of State Tillerson on dangerous consequences of recognizing Jerusalem as capital of Israel. Such a decision would trigger anger across #Arab #Muslim worlds, fuel tension & jeopardize peace efforts,” Ayman Safadi tweeted.

The Jordanian official’s tweet came after The Associated Press reported that President Trump is considering recognizing the holy city as Israel’s capital. 

Trump’s announcement is expected sometime this week, according to the AP.

Observers fear such a decision could spark anger across the region and put American lives there in danger.

Israel considers Jerusalem its capital, though the international community doesn’t recognize Israel’s claim on the entire city. Palestinians claim part of the city as the capital of a future state. 

Safadi’s tweet came the same day Jared Kushner, Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law, said during a Brookings Institution event that the president has yet to decide whether he will move the American embassy in the country from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, another hot-button issue.

However, the AP’s report suggests that Trump will delay moving the embassy to Jerusalem, a key promise during his presidential campaign.
