Koreas set up additional meeting to discuss military and first aid

North Korea and South Korea will resume talks later this month aimed at easing tensions and resuming the reunification of families separated by the Korean War.

Officials from the two countries have agreed to establish a liaison office in the North Korean border village of Kaesong and will discuss fielding unified teams for the Asian Games, set to take place later this year, according to The Associated Press.

The discussions come as the Trump administration seeks to get its canceled summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un back on track.

An official from South Korea’s reunification ministry praised the progress made in the talks after discussions ended on Friday.

{mosads}“If we continue to engage with each other like we did today, there will be no problem that can’t be solved between the South and North,” Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon said, according to the AP.

The two countries now plan to hold military talks on June 14 and Red Cross discussions on June 22, both of which will take place days after a once-planned Singapore summit between President Trump and Kim that is now up in the air.

“We have put a great team together for our talks with North Korea. Meetings are currently taking place concerning Summit, and more. Kim Young Chol, the Vice Chairman of North Korea, heading now to New York,” Trump tweeted on Tuesday, adding “Solid response to my letter, thank you!”

The president said last week that he was canceling the summit in an open letter that was delivered to North Korean officials, calling it “inappropriate” at the current time, but leaving the door open to future talks with Kim.
