The British government is looking for the source of leaked diplomatic cables critical of President Trump, The Associated Press reported Monday.
Officials are reportedly concerned that sensitive confidential information has been leaked in the form of memos and notes sent to the British Foreign Commonwealth Office by the British ambassador to the U.S.
{mosads}In one leaked memo, Kim Darroch branded the Trump administration as “incompetent” and “inept.”
In another, Darroch reportedly wrote to senior politicians in Britain, “We don’t really believe this administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less faction riven; less diplomatically clumsy and inept.”
The leaked cables were intended for senior United Kingdom officials and civil servants and the government believes the leaker will be found among British politicians or officials.
“I’ve seen nothing to suggest hostile state actors were involved,” Prime Minister Theresa May’s spokesman, James Slack, told the AP.
The inquiry is being led by civil servants in the Cabinet Office, and Slack said police would only be called in “if evidence of criminality is found.”
A British official will reportedly apologize to Trump’s daughter and senior White House adviser Ivanka Trump for the leaked memos.
Reuters reports that British trade minister Liam Fox said he will apologize on behalf of the British government in person to Ivanka Trump during his current visit to Washington.
