Pompeo on Sondland testimony: ‘I didn’t see a single thing today. I was working’

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday said he “didn’t see” U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland’s testimony in which Sondland said Pompeo was among officials “in the loop” about efforts to press Ukraine for investigations. 

“I didn’t see a single thing today. I was working. Sounds like you might not have been,” Pompeo said after a reporter asked for his response to Sondland’s testimony.

“I was in meetings all day and haven’t had a chance to see any of that testimony,” the top diplomat added.

Sondland testified Wednesday that a number of officials were aware of efforts to pressure Ukraine to announce it would pursue investigations that President Trump wanted in exchange for a White House call and meeting. 

“There is a July 19 email that I sent to Secretary Pompeo, Secretary Perry, Brian McCormack (Perry’s Chief of Staff), Ms. Kenna, Acting Chief of Staff and OMB Director Mick Mulvaney (White House), and Mr. Mulvaney’s Senior Advisor Robert Blair. A lot of senior officials,” Sondland’s opening statement read. 

“Everyone was in the loop. It was no secret. Everyone was informed via email on July 19, days before the Presidential call. As I communicated to the team, I told President Zelensky in advance that assurances to ‘run a fully transparent investigation’ and ‘turn over every stone’ were necessary in his call with President Trump,” he added.

Pompeo is currently in Brussels at a NATO meeting.
