Earthquake strikes near Iran’s nuclear plant
A 5.1 magnitude earthquake on Friday shook the southwestern region of Iran, near where the country’s first nuclear power plant is located, CNN reports.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake happened around 5 a.m. local time about 27 miles southeast of the city of Borazjan in Bushehr province.
The nuclear power plant is located along the Iranian coastline and not far from the epicenter of the earthquake.
It is still unclear whether the plant was damaged during the quake, the network reports.
In addition to being Iran’s first nuclear power plant, the Bushehr nuclear plant — opened in 2010 — is the first civilian reactor in the Middle East.
