Biden speaks with Trudeau following election

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday said he spoke with President-elect Joe Biden (D) over the phone, where the two committed to jointly confronting climate change and COVID-19.

“I just spoke with [Joe Biden], and congratulated him again on his election,” Trudeau wrote on Twitter.

“We’ve worked with each other before, and we’re ready to pick up on that work and tackle the challenges and opportunities facing our two countries — including climate change and COVID-19,” he continued.

Trudeau added that the two leaders agreed to keep in touch and work closely on a number of bilateral and global issues related to trade, energy and NATO.

The prime minister further called for closer cooperation on confronting China, in particular Beijing’s imprisonment of Canadian citizens believed to be held as retribution for Ottawa’s arrest on fraud charges of Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei.

The Canadian leader also said the two men discussed social issues like anti-Black racism.

“We talked about those specific challenges today, as well as trade, energy, NATO, anti-Black racism, and China’s arbitrary detention of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor,” Trudeau continued. “On these and other issues, President-elect [Joe Biden] and I agreed to keep in touch and work closely together.”

Most world leaders have offered their public congratulations to Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris despite President Trump’s refusal to concede the election and promise to fight the conclusion of the results in court.
