The Israeli military said Tuesday it opened fire on what it described as several suspects approaching troop positions in northern Gaza, as local authorities reported six people killed.

The gunfire come a day after President Trump carried out a whirlwind trip to the region declaring an end to the war between Israel and Hamas while welcoming the return of living hostages to Israel.

Israel said in a post on the social platform X that “several suspects were spotted” crossing a boundary established by the ceasefire and approaching Israeli troops in northern Gaza, which the military called “a clear violation of the agreement.”

“After multiple attempts to distance them, the suspects refused to comply, prompting troops to open fire to remove the threat. Reports of terrorists infiltrating an IDF position are incorrect,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in the statement. “The IDF urges Gaza residents to follow instructions and keep their distance from IDF troops.”

Gaza’s local health authority said the Israeli military killed six Palestinians in two separate incidents across the strip, Reuters reported.

The ceasefire, implemented last week, allowed for the release of the last remaining living hostages held by Hamas and the transfer of bodies also held since the Oct. 7, 2023, attack. Israel released Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and 1,700 Gazans arrested since Oct. 7, while also allowing a scale up of humanitarian aid Gaza to alleviate the massive humanitarian crisis the war caused for nearly 2 million Palestinians.

Hamas has yet to transfer all of the remains of deceased hostages, saying it needs more time to retrieve and hand over the bodies. The Israeli military said Tuesday that the remains of two more people were retrieved, including Israeli Guy Illouz and Bipin Joshi, a Nepalese agriculture student who was studying in Israel at the time of Hamas’s attack.

The Israeli military said Tuesday that the remains of two more people were retrieved, including Israeli Guy Illouz and Bipin Joshi, a Nepalese agriculture student who was studying in Israel at the time of Hamas’s attack. The remains of at least 24 more people remain held by Hamas.

Joshi was abducted at the age of 23 from a shelter in Kibbutz Alumim by Hamas, according to Israel.

“It is assessed that he was murdered in captivity during the first months of the war,” the Israeli military said.
