Weekend protests in Cuba left one man dead in clashes with police while roughly 100 people were arrested in the wake of the historic demonstrations, the country announced Tuesday.
Cuba’s Ministry of the Interior said via state-run Radio Rebelde that a 36-year-old man was killed in a borough outside of Havana.
The notice from the Ministry of the Interior doesn’t list a cause of death for the man, identified as Diubis Laurencio Tejeda, but alleges he was part of a group vandalizing a government building and died “in the midst of a complex scenario,” seeking to preserve tranquility and order.
One witness in the area told Reuters that protesters threw stones at police, who then responded with gunfire.
The U.S. State Department, in a call with congressional staff earlier this week, said that 99 people were arrested in connection with the protests after tens of thousands of people demonstrated across 45 cities.
But Cubalex, a group pushing for democracy in Cuba, estimates that 136 people have been detained or are still missing in the days following the protests.
