Olympic Village records first coronavirus case days before Games begin

The Olympic Village recorded its first coronavirus case on Friday days before the Olympics are set to begin in Tokyo.

Toshiro Muto, the CEO of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee, announced on Saturday that a person from the Olympic Village tested positive for the virus and is currently quarantining in a hotel, USA Today reported.

The person has only been identified as a “Games-concerned personnel.” Muto said names and ethnicities will not be announced for positive cases although National Olympic Committees could choose to release that information.

Muto said it is unknown if the person who contracted the virus was vaccinated.

This comes after organizers announced on Thursday that an Olympic staff member and athlete tested positive for the virus.

There have been dozens of positive cases at events before the official start of the Olympics on July 23, with many in Japan concerned the games will cause a rise in cases.

Tokyo entered another state of emergency due to the increase in cases. Spectators have also been banned from the games and strict rules are being placed on athletes in an attempt to stop the spread.
