Attackers set fire to 18 vehicles, kill at least 30 people in Nigeria: report

Attackers in Nigeria set fire to 18 vehicles Sunday night, killing at least 30 people in Borno State, including a pregnant woman and a baby, CNN reported.

The fire, suspected to have been lit by Boko Haram militants, engulfed vehicles with sleeping travelers in Auno village, which is 15 miles from the capital, about 10 p.m., the Borno State governor media aide Isa Gusau told the network.

The destroyed vehicles included trucks with food and other products intended for city markets the next day. Information on the attack was released Monday afternoon after the Borno State governor visited the scene.

Photos from the scene show burnt bodies next to destroyed vehicles. 

Resident Shehu Tanko told CNN that the pregnant woman and baby were among the victims, and they are still looking for bodies. 

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the terrorist group Boko Haram has waged a decadelong war in the area. The insurgency is known for displacing tens of thousands of residents and kidnapping 276 Chibok schoolgirls in 2014, more than 100 of whom are still missing.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari told the African Union’s security council that the country is making efforts to free all people in terrorist captivity.
