North Korea demands US withdraw ‘hostile policy’

North Korean state media reportedly warned Tuesday that the U.S. risks undoing the progress made in diplomatic relations between the two nations if it did not “withdraw its hostile policy” toward Pyongyang.

State media broadcaster KCNA said that a four-point agreement President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reached last year at a historic summit in Singapore “is in danger of being a blank sheet of paper because the U.S. is turning a blind eye to its implementation,” according to Reuters.

{mosads}“The arrogant and unilateral U.S. policy will never work on the DPRK, which values sovereignty,” KCNA added, using the acronym for North Korea’s official name.

A second Trump-Kim summit ended early in Vietnam with no deal between the nations earlier this year, reportedly due to friction over U.S. demands for denuclearization and North Korean calls for the reduction of sanctions.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Monday that talks between both North Korea and his nation, as well as negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington are likely to pick back up soon, according to Reuters, adding that a third Kim-Trump summit is under discussion, “so I don’t think it’s a situation that needs a third country’s arrangement.”

Trump has continued to express confidence in his ability to reach a deal with Kim despite the collapse of the Hanoi summit.

“I think Chairman Kim would like to make a deal and I’d like to make a deal with him,” Trump said last week during a meeting in Ireland with Prime Minister Leo Varadkar.
