The Chinese Communist Party’s official newspaper warned the United States Tuesday to not push “too far” during trade talks.

The Global Times wrote that the U.S. “cannot push China too far” and must avoid a situation that “spins out of control,” according to the Associated Press.

{mosads}The warning comes on the second day of negotiations between the two nations.

President Trump and his counterpart Xi Jinping agreed on Dec. 1 to halt implementation of new tariffs for 90 days as they seek to reach an agreement that would halt a widening trade war.

The White House has said that if the two sides do not reach a compromise, existing 10 percent tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese imports will be increased to 25 percent.

The U.S. is pressing China to agree to guidelines on intellectual property, technology theft, and non-tariff trade barriers.

The Global Times also reportedly said that China’s economic strength means it can “carry out a more intense boycott” of trade with the United States if needed.

Earlier this month, Xi called for cooperation to resolve to disputes and remove threats to each economy.
