China is barring entry for most British residents as coronavirus cases spike in the United Kingdom.

Great Britain currently has one of the highest COVID-19 death rates in Europe.

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a second monthlong lockdown after the Department of Health reported topping 1 million cases since the pandemic began

The new suspension applies to non-Chinese nationals in the U.K. holding visas or residence permits issued before Tuesday, the Chinese Embassy in London said. Entry holders of other visas will still be allowed, including diplomatic and service visas.

Foreign nationals who seek to visit the country for emergency needs may apply for special visas, the embassy said.

The measures “will be assessed in accordance with the evolving situation and any adjustment will be announced accordingly,” the embassy said.

The Associated Press reports that China has successfully curtailed new COVID-19 cases within its borders but is still dealing with cases from people entering the country. It currently requires all people arriving in the country to quarantine for two weeks.
