US diplomat’s wife says she’s ‘devastated by the tragic accident’ in UK
The wife of a U.S. diplomat who left the United Kingdom after allegedly being involved in a fatal car crash has expressed being “devastated” by the “tragic accident.”
The woman, Anne Sacoolas, left under diplomatic immunity after she was named a suspect in the crash that left 19-year-old Harry Dunn dead.
{mosads}According to the BBC, the U.K.’s Foreign Office has said she does not have immunity since she went home and is a “fugitive from British justice.”
A statement on Sacoolas’s behalf to the BBC said she extended her “deepest sympathy” to the Dunn family and added that she had “fully co-operated with police.”
“Anne is devastated by this tragic accident. No loss compares to the death of a child and Anne extends her deepest sympathy to Harry Dunn’s family,” said a statement on Sacoolas’s behalf obtained by the BBC.
“She spoke with authorities at the scene of the accident and met with the Northampton police at her home the following day. She will continue to co-operate with the investigation,” the statement said.
The statement added that Sacoola would like to “meet with Mr. Dunn’s parents so that she can express her deepest sympathies and apologies for this tragic accident. We have been in contact with the family’s attorneys and look forward to hearing from them.”
Dunn’s parents responded to the statement saying that it took too long for Sacoolas to issue it.
“Why has it taken so long? It’s seven weeks tomorrow since we lost our boy. We feel that that statement should have come out from her right from the beginning instead of getting on a plane and running home,” Dunn’s mother, Charlotte Charles, said in a recent CBS interview.

The incident reportedly occurred in August near the Royal Air Force Croughton military base used by the U.S. Air Force. The BBC reported that Sacoolas’s husband worked at the base.
President Trump last week told reporters that he had spoken with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson about the incident, which he called a “terrible accident.”
“You have two wonderful parents that lost their son, and the woman was driving on the wrong side of the road,” he said. “And that can happen.”
Johnson said prior to the Trump statement that he hoped “Anne Sacoolas will come back and will engage properly with the processes of law as they are carried out in this country.”
