Kushner calls Middle East peace plan a ‘good starting point’

White House adviser Jared Kushner said Thursday night that he believes the Israeli-Palestinian peace plan he has crafted is a “good starting point.”

“What we will be able to put together is a solution that we believe is a good starting point for the political issues and then an outline for what can be done to help these people start living a better life,” he said at a dinner of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, according to Reuters. 

He also said that both sides should look at the plan before making unilateral decisions, the wire service reported. 

“I hope both sides will take a real look at it, the Israeli side and the Palestinian side, before any unilateral steps are made,” said Kushner, who is President Trump’s son-in-law.{mosads}

Kushner and Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt have spent two years on the plan. Palestinians have halted negotiations with the U.S. after Trump moved the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem and recognized the city as Israel’s capital. 

“I was given the assignment of trying to find a solution between the two sides and I think what we’ll put forward is a framework that I think is realistic … it’s executable and it’s something that I do think will lead to both sides being much better off,” Kushner said Thursday. 

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would annex Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank during Israel’s recent election campaign, angering Palestinians and further complicating the path to peace. Kushner said Thursday that he has not discussed settlement annexation with Netanyahu. 

Kushner told ambassadors last month that plan will not be unveiled until June at the earliest.
