Iran says nuclear site hit by terrorism: state tv

Iranian state television reported on Sunday that one of the country’s nuclear sites was hit by a terrorist attack, according to Reuters.

The country’s nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi called the attack an act of “nuclear terrorism” adding that Tehran has the right to take action against those responsible.

“While condemning this despicable move, Iran emphasizes the need for the international community and the International Atomic Energy Agency to deal with this nuclear terrorism and reserves the right to take action against the perpetrators,” Salehi said. 

The incident took place after Tehran announced the launch of new advanced uranium enrichment centrifuges at the site Friday. 

The facility is located in the province of Isfahan, which is at the center of the country’s uranium enrichment program and is monitored by inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency. 

Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said to Iranian media that a problem with the electrical distribution grid of the Natanz site has caused the incident. 

“The incident caused no casualties or contamination,” Kamalvandi said. 

A fire broke out at the facility last July, which the government said was an attempt to sabotage the country’s nuclear program. 

The incident comes as the U.S. and Iran attempt to revive the 2015 nuclear deal after former President Trump abandoned the agreement three years ago.
