Rockets target Iraqi military bases housing U.S. troops, foreign contractors

Multiple rockets were fired on Wednesday that targeted Iraqi military bases housing U.S. troops and foreign contractors.

Iraqi military officials told The Associated Press that three of the rockets hit Balad air base, which was housing foreign contractors. The base is located north of Baghdad. No casualties or damage was caused.

Another missile reportedly hit near a military base close to Baghdad airport, though it was not clear if the explosion was caused by a drone strike or a rocket, the AP reported.

An Iraqi security official reported hearing two rockets and preliminary findings showed that there had been a drone attack. A trailer was also reportedly set on fire during the attack.

No casualties were reported. 

Though there was not an immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, U.S. officials in the past have placed blame on Iraqi militia factions.

Over a dozen attacks targeting U.S. forces in Iraq have been reported since President Biden took office, the AP noted. Over 10 people have been killed.

Weaponry including drones have been used in the most recent attacks, concerning Iraqi and U.S. military officials, according to the AP.
