Israel bombs sites in Gaza after demonstration grows violent

Israel reportedly bombed Palestinian weapons sites on Sunday in response to violent demonstrations that took place around the territory’s perimeter fence to protest an Israeli-Egyptian blockade.

According to The Associated Press, the Israeli army said in a statement that fighter planes hit “four weapons and storage manufacturing sites” belonging to Hamas, which rules over Gaza. No injuries have been reported in the airstrikes.

Demonstrations broke out on Saturday against the ongoing blockade being imposed on Gaza by Israel and Egypt. Protesters reportedly threw rocks and explosives at Israeli soldiers. The AP reported that at least 24 Palestinians were injured in gunfire from Israeli soldiers.

One Israeli Border Police officer was shot and critically injured, according to the news service.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett vowed to his Cabinet on Sunday that he would “settle the score with those who harm our soldiers and Israeli civilians.”

This attack on Gaza comes some three months after Israel and Hamas engaged in 11 days of fighting that resulted in more than 250 Palestinian deaths as well as the deaths of at least 13 Israelis. The violence occurred after Hamas fired long-range rockets toward Jerusalem in response to clashes between police and protesters near the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the evictions of Palestinian families Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

On May 20, Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire.
