Train crash in Turkey kills 6

A train crash in Turkey on Saturday killed six people and injured seven others, according to The Associated Press.

The crash occurred in the Ergene, Tekirdag province Saturday morning, AP reported, citing Turkish news agency Demiroren.

According to the news outlet, the incident involved a minibus that was transporting textile factory workers after a night shift, and a freight train headed to Cerkezkoy. The six people who died were on the minibus.

Footage aired by TV channels showed the minibus driver maneuvering around a barrier to cross the tracks before the train struck. The minibus was then dragged in front of the train after impact, according to AP.

Images showed the vehicle lying on its roof alongside the train tracks.

Turkey’s Chamber of Mechanical Engineers said last year that railroad accidents in the country were three times the global average, AP noted.

In 2018, 24 people were killed after a train carrying 362 passengers derailed as it was headed to Istanbul, France 24 reported at the time. Five of the six cars on the train derailed due to heavy rains.
