Three shot dead at Afghan wedding during fight over music

Three people were fatally shot and 10 more were injured at a wedding in Afghanistan after an argument over whether music could be played. 

Residents said they recognized the gunmen as local Taliban members, NBC News reported. 

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed that the incident occurred after demands that the wedding party stop playing music, but he denied that the gunmen were members of the Taliban, according to NBC. 

However, an anonymous member of Taliban’s intelligence department, who was not authorized to speak to the media, told NBC that the gunmen were members of the group.

A resident, who remained anonymous for fear of retaliation from the Taliban, told NBC the gunmen “were harsh in their arguments with the family holding a marriage ceremony and local residents.”

The Taliban made one arrest in connection with the incident and efforts were underway to arrest the other two assailants, Mujahid said, according to NBC.

The Taliban gained control of Afghanistan in August. On Saturday, the Taliban’s supreme leader, Haibatullah Akhundzada, made his first confirmed public outing since the group’s seizure of Kabul, quashing rumors of his death that had been circulating for weeks.
