Three United Nations staff members were killed by a car bomb in Libya and three others were injured, a spokesman for the United Nations Secretary General confirmed to The Hill.
Libyan health officials had previously told The Associated Press that two security staffers were killed by a car bomb in Benghazi, Libya.
The vehicle reportedly exploded outside a mall Saturday where people were shopping before the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday. {mosads}
The Arkan Mall is near offices for the U.N. Support Mission in Libya, according to the AP. The wire service reported that video posted online showed smoke and what looked like burnt vehicles owned by the U.N.
The spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said in a statement that Guterres “condemns in the strongest terms the car bomb attack.”
“The Secretary-General calls on all parties to respect the humanitarian truce during Eid al Adha and return to the negotiating table to pursue the peaceful future the people of Libya deserve,” he added.
