DOJ to show top lawmakers documents on FBI source on Trump campaign

The Department of Justice (DOJ) will reportedly move Thursday to invite top lawmakers from Congress’s “Gang of Eight” to review documents related to a confidential informant used by the FBI to contact members of the Trump campaign.

An agency source told CNN that the department will invite top members of both parties to review the documents early next week, ending a standoff between the DOJ and Republican members of Congress who had subpoenaed it over documents related to the informant.

The document review, which has not yet been officially scheduled, will reportedly take place early next week. It would come just days after the Justice Department held briefings on the informant with the Gang of Eight as well as a separate briefing with GOP lawmakers.

“The Department and FBI are prepared to brief members on certain questions specifically raised by the Speaker and other members,” the source told CNN. “The Department will also provide the documents that were available for review but not inspected by the members at the previous briefing along with some additional material.”

“The Department and FBI take congressional inquiries seriously and believe that the documents provided next week will be valuable to the Gang of Eight,” the source added.

The development comes just a day after Democratic members of the Gang of Eight sent a letter to the DOJ demanding to know whether materials related to the informant that previously were shared with them also were shared with members of President Trump’s legal team.

Trump’s attorney, Rudy Giuliani, has argued that Trump will not sit down with the special counsel for an interview unless his legal team is allowed to view documents related to the FBI’s use of the informant in proximity to his campaign.

Trump, who has frequently cast doubt on the legitimacy of the special counsel probe, has said without evidence that the FBI’s use of the informant was proof the Obama administration spied on his campaign illegally.
