McCabe: Trump ‘undermining the role of law enforcement’

Former acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe excoriated President Trump on Tuesday, saying he’s undermining law enforcement and the intelligence community.

“This President is undermining the role of law enforcement, undermining the role of our intelligence infrastructure and negatively impacting the men and women of the FBI, and across the intelligence agencies, [and their] ability to protect this country on a daily basis,” McCabe said on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360.”

Trump has repeatedly panned the FBI and Department of Justice (DOJ), saying its leadership is conducting a “witch hunt” and improperly surveilled his presidential campaign.{mosads}

McCabe, who was fired from the FBI at Trump’s behest shortly before his retirement, has become an outspoken critic of the president since his dismissal. He revealed last week that senior officials discussed the possibility of removing Trump under the 25th Amendment and that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein indeed offered to wear a wire around the president on multiple occasions. 

McCabe later walked back his remarks, with a spokesperson issuing a statement that he did not “participate in any extended discussions about the use of the 25th Amendment, nor is he aware of any such discussions.”

He also admitted he opened an investigation into whether Trump was working on behalf of Moscow after the president fired FBI Director James Comey, adding that none of the top eight congressional leaders objected when he briefed them in 2017.

The former FBI official is currently on a book tour promoting “The Threat,” which details his time in the FBI and his work with officials at the White House and DOJ. He is also under criminal investigation for misleading federal prosecutors in their probe into the FBI’s handling of the investigation into the Clinton Foundation.
