US citizen brought back from Syria to face terrorism charges: report

U.S. authorities have reportedly brought an American citizen suspected of joining ISIS fighters in Syria back to the U.S. to face a trial.

CNN reported Thursday that two U.S. officials confirmed the transfer of the unnamed prisoner, who is suspected of fighting with ISIS forces in Syria against U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces.

{mosads}The prisoner is one of thousands of foreign-born fighters being held by Kurdish and other U.S.-backed forces in Iraq and Syria. As many as 9,000 suspected ISIS fighters as well as roughly 60,000 ISIS “affiliates” are also being held at camps in the region, according to CNN.

The Justice Department did not immediately return a request for comment from The Hill on the prisoner transfer.

The United States is one of just seven countries that have reportedly taken back citizens suspected of being ISIS fighters. Many countries have preferred to simply bar the return of their citizens who choose to fight for ISIS abroad.

The Trump administration called earlier this year for countries to take on the task of taking in and prosecuting foreign-born ISIS fighters captured by coalition forces.

A senior administration official told The Hill earlier this year that the White House “strongly believe[s] the best solution is for countries to take responsibility for their citizens.”
