House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) is accusing Michael Flynn of failing to comply with a subpoena for documents and his testimony, leading the Democrat to issue a new deadline for the former national security adviser to cooperate.
“Notwithstanding repeated efforts by Committee Staff to engage with your counsel and accommodate your adjournment requests, you have, to date, failed to comply with the Committee’s subpoena or cooperate with the Committee’s efforts to secure your compliance,” Schiff wrote in a Friday letter.
Schiff said his panel “now commands” Flynn to appear before the panel on Sept. 25.
{mosads}Schiff subpoenaed Flynn in June, ordering him to provide documents to the panel by June 26 and testimony on July 10.
“General Flynn and his counsel have failed to cooperate with the Committee in all respects — he has provided no documents in response to our subpoena, nor has he engaged with the Committee in an appropriate or satisfactory manner,” a committee staffer said in a statement.
The staffer said that Flynn had agreed to cooperate with the U.S. government when he agreed to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller, who was examining Russian interference and possible episodes of obstruction by President Trump.
“General Flynn agreed to cooperate with the United States government, which should include the Congress. And while we cannot evaluate whether he has met his obligation to the Justice Department, there is no question that he has thus far failed to cooperate with the Congress in any meaningful way,” the staffer continued.
In December 2017, Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators about his contacts with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak and agreed to cooperate in Mueller’s investigation.
He has not yet been sentenced.
