Silicon Valley firm apologizes (sort of) for IP breach in canned-unicorn product

ThinkGeek had promised to sell the (blatantly) parodic product on its website, marketing it
under the title “the new white meat.” The can for the product possibly
resembled pork products.

The National Pork Board (NPB) did not find the product hilarious.

“We are writing to you in connection with your activities at the website www.thinkgeek.com wherein you have been marketing a product called ‘Radiant Farms Canned Unicorn Meat’ using the slogan ‘Unicorn — the new white meat,’ ” NPB’s cease-and-desist letter said.

“National Pork Board is the owner of the mark ‘The Other White Meat’ in the United States and elsewhere around the world,” the letter clarified.

Geeknet kept the story alive by issuing an apology last month under the heading “new white meat from sparkly unicorns not meant to replace pork-based diets.”

“It was never our intention to create a national crisis and misguide American citizens regarding the differences between the pig and the unicorn,” Scott Kauffman, president and CEO of Geeknet, said in a statement.

“In fact, ThinkGeek’s canned unicorn meat is sparkly, a bit red, and not approved by any government entity.”
