T-Mobile says free streaming data program now includes over 100 services

T-Mobile said on Tuesday that it now offers more than 100 streaming services that customers can access without cutting into their monthly data allotment.

The company added services on Tuesday like Apple Music, ABC and Fox Now to Binge On, the free-data program that it introduced less than a year ago. It said that customers have streamed 765 million hours of video under the program.

Bombastic chief executive John Legere’s victory lap underscores the growth of so-called zero-rating programs, which give users free data when customers view certain services or applications. Verizon and AT&T have both experimented with such “sponsored data” offers in collaboration with advertisers.

But the programs have raised concerns among some about whether they violate net neutrality, the principle that all traffic on the web should be treated in the same way, because they guide users to specific services or products.

Last year, the Federal Communications Commission sent several letters to internet service providers asking them about their zero-rating programs. But since then, the commission has been largely mum on whether it will look to crack down on the plans.

“We’re collecting information, as I’ve been telling you for months, we’re in ongoing discovery mode to try and have an understanding of just what is the spectrum that we’re dealing with here so that we can deal with these issues on a case by case basis,” FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said in June.
