Instagram rolls out ‘get support’ feature for users searching opioid hashtags

Instagram is rolling out a new “get support” pop-up feature to offer resources to users who may be struggling with opioid or substance abuse. 

The feature will launch in the U.S. on Wednesday and will eventually be available globally, according to BuzzFeed News.

With the new feature, Instagram users who search drug-related hashtags like #opioid or #uppers will see a menu pop-up that includes a link to a page containing information about resources to address substance abuse.

{mosads}“If you or someone you know is struggling with opioid or substance misuse, find ways to get free and confidential treatment referrals, as well as information about substance use, prevention, and recovery,” the menu reads.

Karina Newton, the social media platform’s head of public policy, called the feature an “important step” in making Instagram the “kindest, safest social network,” BuzzFeed reports.

“The opioid epidemic is an issue that affects millions of people, and we want to use our platform to offer resources to those who need it — in the places where they are seeking help,” Newton said.

Instagram said the #opioid hashtag is popular among users seeking support from others struggling with substance abuse. The company has blocked some hashtags that are primarily used by people attempting to sell drugs.
