China summoned tech giants for talks after Huawei blacklisting: report

China reportedly called in officials from global technology giants for meetings after the Trump administration announced a ban on Huawei products in the U.S.

Reuters reports a source at Microsoft said China arranged a meeting with company officials last week and told them that complying with the U.S. blacklist of Huawei products would lead to further complications.

{mosads}The source told Reuters the meeting was not meant to serve as a warning, with Chinese officials instead advising Microsoft to not make any rash moves before fully assessing the situation.

Chinese officials also reportedly met last week with Dell, South Korea’s Samsung and SK Hynix and British computer chip designer ARM.

President Trump last month signed on executive order barring U.S. companies from working with Huawei, arguing the company’s products pose a “national security risk,” though the move was delayed 90 days so tech companies can plan ahead and not disrupt telecommunication providers.

Reuters noted it is not uncommon for Chinese officials to speak with representatives from foreign companies.

China has vowed to release its own list of “unreliable” foreign entities in retaliation to Huawei being blacklisted in the U.S.

The meetings with top technology companies come just days after Facebook announced it will no longer allow its app to be pre-installed on Huawei phones.

The tension between the U.S. and Huawei comes as trade talks with China have stalled and the two countries imposed tariffs on each other.
