Tinder chief named new Yahoo CEO

Former Tinder chief Jim Lanzone has been named the new CEO of Yahoo, the company announced on Friday.

In a statement, Yahoo said it will leverage Lanzone’s “deep media experience to drive the next generation of innovation across its world-class content and advertising platforms.”

Lanzone will succeed Guru Gowrappan, who was named senior adviser to Apollo Global Management’s private equity business. Lanzone will begin his new role on Sept. 27.

“I am so honored to have the opportunity to lead Yahoo and represent such an iconic portfolio of brands as we enter a transformational new era for the company,” Lanzone said in a statement.

“I look forward to working with the exceptionally talented Yahoo team, globally, as we create and innovate daily on behalf of our millions of users and advertising partners worldwide,” he continued.

Lanzone was named CEO of Tinder in July 2020, and has served in the role since that August.

Match Group, which owns Tinder, separately announced that Renate Nyborg will replace Lanzone effective Sept. 27. Nyborg will be the first woman to lead Tinder.

Before serving as CEO of Tinder, Lanzone worked at CBS from 2011 to 2019. There, he led digital operations at CBS Corporation as chief digital officer and chief executive officer of CBS Interactive.

The announcement comes over a week after Apollo Global Management completed its $5 billion acquisition of Yahoo from Verizon.

Verizon announced in May that it would receive $4.25 billion in cash for Yahoo and preferred interests of $750 million.

Verizon still holds a 10 percent stake in Yahoo.
