Peacock to stream Universal movies 45 days after theatrical release

NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock will start streaming Universal films 45 days after their theatrical release, The Los Angeles Times reported

Peacock announced Thursday that starting in 2022 the majority of movies from Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, including Universal, Focus Features, and Dreamworks Animation movies, will be available on its streaming service.

Most Universal films will follow the 45-day streaming model, with the notable exceptions of “Jurassic World: Dominion,” which will wait 120 days before hitting the streaming service; and “Oppenheimer,” the next film from the director Christopher Nolan, a staunch advocate for traditional film releases, according to The Times.

The pandemic saw a rush of movies hitting streaming services either at the same time they hit theaters, or very shortly after.

Some of those changes now seem to be a part of the entertainment landscape.

WarnerMedia’s HBO Max has released movies such as “King Richard” and “Dune” simultaneously with their theatrical release on its streaming service.

“As we continue investing in the most valued and sought-after content for Peacock, films are essential to that mix,” Peacock President Kelly Campbell said in a statement.

The streaming service, launched last year, has previously experimented with early releases of “The Boss Baby: Family Business” and “Halloween Kills”  available to customers on its subscription tier, The Times noted.
