Foxx DOT watch continues as Pritzker confirmed for Commerce secretary

Transportation observers are watching for a Senate vote on the confirmation of Transportation Secretary nominee Anthony Foxx after the upper chamber approved President Obama’s Commerce secretary choice on Tuesday.

Chicago businesswoman Penny Pritzker was confirmed by the Senate on a 97-1 vote with little debate preceding the roll call.

Foxx and Pritzker were vetted by the same committee, and the current Charlotte mayor is expected to similarly receive bipartisan support when his nomination is brought to the Senate floor.

{mosads}Congressional sources have told The Hill that a vote on Foxx will definitely come this week, but no firm time has been set yet.

If Foxx is confirmed, he would be a second African-American member of Obama’s Cabinet, along with Attorney General Eric Holder. The president had previously faced criticism about a lack of diversity in second-term Cabinet appointments.

Foxx has promised to work across party lines if he is confirmed.

“There is no such thing as a Democratic or Republican road, bridge, port, air field or rail system,” Foxx said when he was introduced as Obama’s DOT choice in April.

“We must work together across party lines to enhance this nation’s infrastructure,” Foxx continued in his late April remarks.
