Survivors of the emergency plane landing that has come to be known as the “Miracle on the Hudson” gathered in New York this week to celebrate the fifth anniversary of living to tell about their flight touching down in the middle of a river, The Associated Press reports.
Attendees at the remembrance included Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, who became famous after piloting the disabled US Airways airplane to safety, according to the report.
{mosads}“I’m filled with joy and gratitude about what was able to be accomplished by so many five years ago today and the fact that all 155 passengers and crew are here today because of it,” Sullenberger said.
The emergency landing of US Air Flight 1549 took place just days before President Obama took office in 2009.
The plane was felled by a bird strike that took out both its engines, but Sullenberger safely brought the jet down in the Hudson River and emergency crews conducted a water evacuation.
