The transportation sector gained 7,900 jobs in March as the national unemployment rate remained steady at 6.7 percent, according to statistics released by the Department of Labor on Friday.
The Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said there were 4,564,600 jobs in transportation in March, compared to 4,556,700 in February.
The jump was part of an overall 192,000 increase in overall jobs in March, the BLS said.
{mosads}The transportation sector with the highest employment increase was “truck transportation,” which had 1,393,400 jobs in March, compared to 1,390,100 in February.
The biggest drop in employment in the transportation sector was “couriers and messengers,” which lost 2,200 jobs last month. The category had 552,900 jobs in March, which was down from 555,100 in February.
The airline industry gained 800 jobs in March, going from 451,700 in February to 454,200 last month.
Rail companies gained 600 jobs, going from 233,300 in February to 233,900 last month.
