NFL player told TSA to search him further

An NFL player who was arrested for allegedly making a bomb threat at Los Angeles International Airport asked for further inspection from the Transportation Security Administration, the San Jose Mercury News reports. 

San Francisco 49ers player Aldon Smith was initially reported to have made the threat after becoming angry about being selected for additional screening by TSA officials.  

Los Angeles Airport Police Department officials said Tuesday that Smith asked for the additional attention from the TSA, however. 

{mosads}”Are you going to search me further?” Smith said during the screening, LAX Police Sgt. Karla Ortiz told the paper. 

Ortiz said the TSA agent who was checking Smith responded, “That’s not necessary,” to which the NFL player allegedly said “Why not? I have a bomb.”

Charges have not yet been filed against Smith, according to the report. 

San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said last week when Smith was first arrested that the team was investigating the incident.

“As this is a pending legal matter and we are still gathering the pertinent facts, we will have no further comment,” Baalke said in a statement.
