Airlines cancel 5K flights ahead of storm

Airlines canceled 5,195 flights on Monday and Tuesday in anticipation of a large snowstorm that has been forecasted to impact major cities in the Northeast, according to the website FlightAware.com. 

As much as two feet of snow is forecasted to fall in major cities on the East Coast like New York City and Boston.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) has warned the snow storm could produce conditions in the Northeast that are “worse than we have ever seen before.” 

{mosads}Airlines have responded to the dire forecast with widespread pre-emptive cancellations at airport hubs like Newark Liberty International Airport that could have widespread impact on flight operations across the country. 

The FlightAware website said airlines have canceled 2,522 flights that were scheduled for Monday and 2,673 Tuesday to prepare for the storm. Another 381 flights Monday were delayed because of the storm, according to the site.

The leading airport for cancellations on Monday was New York’s LaGuardia Airport, which had 235 outgoing and 13 inbound flights delayed. 

Newark Liberty International, New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport, Philadelphia International Airport and Chicago’s O’Hare Airport rounded out the top five on the delay list Monday.
