Four people were killed when a pedestrian bridge collapsed at the Florida International University campus on Thursday, the local fire chief confirmed.

Miami-Dade Fire Chief Dave Downey told reporters that first responders had located four deceased victims as of Thursday night. Emergency personnel would continue to search for other survivors, he said.

A number of other people were injured in the collapse, while 10 people were taken to the hospital, with two in critical condition when they arrived.

The victims’ ages ranged from 20 to 50 years old, ABC News reported.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) said the state would do its best to determine the cause of the collapse.

“If anybody’s done anything wrong, we’ll hold them accountable,” he said.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it will investigate the bridge collapse once its investigative team arrives at the scene.

University officials said they were “shocked and saddened” by the bridge’s collapse, which occurred days after the main segment was installed and before the path was opened to foot traffic.
