Uber is planning to use exclusively all-electric cars in London by 2025, the company said Tuesday, according to media reports.
Uber said it will also begin charging passengers in London a “clean air fee” to help fund its transition to using only electric cars.
{mosads}In a statement announcing Uber’s intent to go all-electric in the city, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi noted London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s efforts to clean up the air in the United Kingdom’s capital.
“The mayor of London has set out a bold vision to tackle air pollution in the capital and we’re determined to do everything we can to back it,” Khosrowshahi said in the statement, according to reports.
Uber has a shaky history in London, which is the company’s biggest market. Uber has more than 40,000 drivers in the city.
Last year, Uber lost its license to operate in the city, with Transport for London ruling that Uber was “not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator licence” because it didn’t properly report criminal offenses.
But the company was reinstated in the city earlier this year, earning a 15-month probationary license to continue operating in London after a judge ruled that Uber had changed its ways since it lost its license in the city.
