Southwest flight delays, cancellations extend into third day

Southwest Airlines is experiencing more flight delays and cancellations as technical issues that began on Monday continue.

Thousands of flights were delayed and hundreds have been canceled over the past three days due to a range of technical issues. 

FlightAware, a flight tracking service, showed almost 300 Southwest flights canceled and more than 400 delayed on Wednesday so far, The Associated Press reported.

The airline has not released the details of the technical issues occurring Wednesday, but the glitch has affected almost one-fifth of the company’s scheduled flights, AP noted.

“While our technology issues from Tuesday have been resolved, we are still experiencing a small number of cancelations and delays across our network as we continue working to resume normal operations,” a spokesperson for Southwest told The Hill in a statement. 

Southwest described Tuesday’s technical issue as a “system issue … that created flight disruptions throughout our network.” 

There were 560 flights canceled and more than 1,800 delayed, along with the Federal Aviation Administration grounding Southwest flights for a short amount of time, according to AP.

The technical issues began Monday for multiple airlines, with Southwest creating the biggest problem for passengers. 

Southwest’s weather data provider would not work, forcing many planes to land due to safety reasons. There were 1,500 flights delayed. 

Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines both had technical issues Monday with their apps and booking not working properly for customers.

American Airlines also experienced some issues Wednesday, with more than 90 flights canceled and 40 delayed, according to AP.
