Efficiency rules target air conditioners, clothes dryers

The Department of Energy (DOE) announced its latest round of energy conservation standards for household appliances Wednesday.

Air conditioners and clothes dryers could be facing new efficiency rules from the Energy Department’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

{mosads}The Energy Department is looking at new test procedures for these household appliances that are intended to save energy. The rules would apply to residential clothes dryers, as well as split-system and single-package air conditioners.

The DOE will hold public meetings for both of these appliances where it will consider proposing new standards.

The public meeting for air conditioners will take place on Friday, while the public meeting for clothes dryers is scheduled for Nov. 13.

The rules come from the Energy Policy and Conservation Act.
